Haven for iOS is a client app for Haven, a self-hosted chat server. The app is a window onto a server that you or someone you know runs. Understanding who holds your data starts there.
Who collects what
The developer collects nothing. This app has no analytics, no crash reporting, no advertising, no tracking of any kind, and no servers of its own. Nothing you type, send or view is sent to the developer.
Your Haven server holds your data. When you sign in, the app talks directly to the server address you typed and to no one else. Your messages, pictures, files, profile, and the record of which channels you belong to live on that server, under the control of whoever runs it. If that isn't you, ask its administrator how they handle it. The developer has no access to any Haven server other than his own, and no ability to read, retrieve or delete anything held on yours.
What stays on your iPhone
- Your sign-in token, in the iOS Keychain, so you don't have to sign in again each time. Deleting the app removes it.
- The certificate fingerprint of each server you've chosen to trust, so the app can warn you if it ever changes.
- Small preferences: the last server and channel you used, and the list of people you have blocked.
- Cached pictures and files you have viewed, which iOS clears as it needs space.
None of this is transmitted anywhere.
Permissions the app asks for
- Photos, only when you choose a picture to send, or save one you were sent.
- Camera, only when you take a photo to send.
- Microphone, only while you are in a voice channel.
Each is used for that purpose alone, at the moment you ask for it.
Children
The app is not directed at children. Haven servers require anyone registering to confirm they are 18 or older.
Blocking and reporting
You can block anyone from inside the app; blocked people's messages are hidden on your device immediately. You can also report a message, which sends the details to the address below so it can be looked at and, where the developer can act, acted on within 24 hours. Reports about behaviour on someone else's server may need to be passed to that server's administrator, since that is who can remove content or ban an account there.
Deleting your account
Settings in the app has a Delete Account option. It asks for your password and then tells your server to erase your account, optionally including your messages. This is permanent and the developer cannot undo it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date at the top changes with it.
